In this series of lessons, I have put together a basic course to help guitarists understand the fundamentals of music theory. To have a basic understanding of music goes a long way. When teaching people one to one, it is very common for students to have no knowledge of music theory. Even when I was stating out learning guitar, I didn’t have any interest in learning theory, I wanted to be one of those musicians who would play by ear and not need any theory ! Little did I know that it doesn’t really work like that.

We all hear these stories of how our guitar idols couldn’t read a note of music etc etc, which may well be the case, but here’s the important thing, they knew what they were doing, do you ? It’s important to point out that I am not suggesting we become masters of theory who can sight read music etc etc, just that we understand what we are doing, that is very important and will indeed make you a more complete musician and whats more it needn’t be that difficult.
